A bit confused about the purpose of Demiplane

As the title suggests, I’m a bit confused about what Demiplane is for when it comes to the Cosmere RPG.

They have the source books (barebones implementation) and then, completely separately, a campaign running tool which constitutes voice, video, die roller, notes, and a place to organise characters taking part in the campaign. Is there no integration between content you own on Demiplane and the ‘Adventure Portal’? What if I want to show players a picture of a location/person/creature they’ve encountered? Is there no way to run an encounter in the Adventure Portal? I can’t see any easy way to do this. What time-saving thing is this doing that I can’t do in Discord?

What if I want to run ‘A First Step’ session zero? This is content on here but how would I achieve that with the character creator and where would I find the GM’s sheet to fill out on here?

Then there is the Roll20 integration (?) - What is this for? Do I also need to own the content, such as campaigns over on Roll20 as well? (If this is the case I feel like a right idiot for buying it all on here)

Sorry if I’m being dense but I find the whole thing poorly explained.

Roll20 is the VTT, where you could show pictures/creature etc.
and no you don’t need to purchase the content again on Roll20, all you need is link your Roll20 and Demiplane account (Account Setting → Sync Account → Roll20 Account Link) and the content should unlock on Roll20.

Hi @the1ben - the groups experience you’re seeing today is a remnant of our pre-characters launch. Believe it or not, there was a time where we did not have character tools on the platform!

We’re rebuilding our groups experience to better align with each individual Nexus platform. I expect that to roll out yet this year. This will allow you to invite players to your game and see their characters.

EDIT: sorry, I missed the comment at the end of your post. Most content on Demiplane is linked to the same content on Roll20. The integration allows for you to (1) link your accounts if you have them to sync your purchases, and (2) use your character sheets, NPC sheets, and the Demiplane compendium broadly on Roll20.

Hope that helps. I’ll think through how to better message the totality of the offering. Appreciate you taking the time to ask.

Thanks for taking the time to explain.

groups is getting updated this year, thats good to hear as thats a feature thats sorely missing, being able to set up campaigns for different groups and being able to see their characters will be nice. (I know they can create a shareable link and all andit is a current workaround.

What do you find “barbones” about the implementation of the source books, just curious? They also have the character tools for building characters as well.

Demiplane has been DDB but for game system that wasn’t D&D, until recently, they now have official D&D 5E stuff and not just 3rd party 5E publishers.

Content being linked is factually incorrect. Most newer products don’t have content on Roll20 except through the underwhelming “Demiplane Integration” project, via which we can maybe, sort of, make a character on Demiplane and then jump through enough hoops to get it to load on Roll20. But the load time for every character sheet makes this a frustrating experience.

Starfinder 2E: not available on Roll20
Marvel Multiverse RPG Core: not available on Roll20
Cosmere Stormlight Handbook: not available on Roll20
Daggerheart Core: not available on Roll20

So the question stands: what is the point of Demiplane?

Character creation: we have it on Roll20
Character sheets: have it on Roll20 and they load much faster
Compendiums: got those. At least we should. Looking at you, Starfinder 2E.
Virtual Dice: have that too
Voice/Video: yup.
Shared Content: got it.
Homebrew: Oh, that’s right. Demiplane can’t handle homebrew.

Roll20 has been cramming “Demiplane Integration” down our throats like it’s the next sliced bread, so I thought I’d check in and see if this half had some information that Roll20 was withholding. But no.

So forgive me if I’m not a convert. Demiplane has nothing I want, and it’s slower than molasses.

hmm, I can access both Cosmere and Daggerheart compendiums in Roll20, one of which I had to click demiplane at the botton and it was fast to load those. Roll20 has such a terrible interface and hard to navigate for character creation. I’d take Demiplane character creation over Roll20’s implementation of it any day.

I can agree that the speed at which things load could be faster, though.
