Great question! As of this time, our character tools are not connected to our groups, however that is on the roadmap. When we hit that milestone, it will be possible to add characters to a group and manage them within the group.
In the meantime, you can create a character for your players and share it with them, which will allow them to save a copy that they can edit. 
Will there be NPC creation support? I see now under campaigns it is called “coming soon” along with encounters and resources but it seems like it’s been this way forever. Is this definitely in the works, or is that just a placeholder? I bought the whole bundle and I pay monthly for content sharing for my group, and being able to create and manage NPCs is the biggest obstacle to my play right now, depending mostly on physical paper resources for NPCs when everything else I have is digital.
I 2nd your question and am hoping to be able to do it. You are so right. so much easier if it could be housed online
