Howdy folks,
I am in the process of creating an awakened animal and I noticed an issue when comparing my build on Demiplane to the build I was transposing from Pathbuilder. Namely, that on Demiplane during Ancestry selection, I would get prompted for a Size (perfectly normal), and a Speed Type immediately, but only get prompted for Size in Pathbuilder. Thinking this might be a rules interpretation issue, I took my problem to Reddit to see which tool had implemented it correctly, and the answer came back that the Speed Type should only arise if a Versatile Heritage was selected. Otherwise if someone picks one of the basic 4 Awakened Animal Heritages, they will be assigned their speeds based on the Heritage chosen.
The fix I believe is that Speed Type should only be prompted for when a Versatile Heritage for an Awakened Animal is selected. Otherwise it just looks like one can pick a speed type, and then turn around and pick up more speed types via their Heritages. As someone doing an Awakened Grizzly I “worked” the options so I had a swim speed from Aquatic Animal “Speed Type” and a land/climb speed by picking the Climbing Animal Heritage. Perfectly reasonable for a Grizzly I thought, but perhaps unbalanced from a game design stand point.
For additional detail, here is the link to that Reddit thread I got my original answer from.
