Codex - Book Of Ava (Ice Spikes)

Question regarding the Ice Spikes ability in the Book of Ava. It reads:

Ice Spikes: Make a Spellcast Roll to summon large ice spikes within very far range. If you use them as a weapon, on a success, deal d6 physical damage using your proficiency.

Is this an AoE spell? If an AoE, what is the area range?
Or perhaps a line of Ice Spikes in a direction?
If there are more than one spikes, how many are there?

If none of the above are true, then the name should perhaps be changed to “Ice Spike”, huh?

It’s intended to be vague for versitility (perhaps too vague, tho). So you could create spikes in walls to act as handholds, spikes on the floor to impede movement, or target a creature and attack them. It doesn’t have a cost to cast, so you have more freedom in how many you choose to summon at a time, you just need to spend more actions to increase the effect. My ruling would be it can target a single enemy for an attack per action spent, and then for more utility uses it would be an action per use, eg. 1 action to use the spell to create some handholds up to a plateau.
It is intentionally vague, but intent doesn’t necessarily mean well-designed, so I understand your confusion and frustration with the lack of clarity

Gotcha. I was looking for too descriptive of a… description… I guess. I like the way you explain it, and how it can be more functional as a tool, as well as a weapon.

Thanks!
