Dungeon Max's Kingmaker Feedback - Solo Play Session 1 (spoilers)

As I mentioned in my most recent Season of Ghosts feedback, I’m solo playing Kingmaker to get a feel for its subsystems as I consider it for a follow up to my current main campaigns on Thursday and Sunday. Anyway, as mentioned there I have one character I made and the party is rounded out with rebuilds of Linzi, Amiri and Valerie (and possibly other companions later). I’m just up to defending Oleg’s Trading Post now and here’s some thoughts I have so far:

  • Until you leave the manor, nothing much new going on here. Just good old fun pathfinder. I will say that I’m glad that for my character I went with a nymph bloodline sorcerer (which the player guide recommended) for extra heals because things are hitting really hard.
  • As an aside… speaking of player’s guides… I noticed that extinction curse went live without the player’s guide on demiplane
  • After setting out on the journey… boy there’s lots to track… I’m gonna have to up my owlbear rodeo game: calendar, weather, hexploration activities, campsites established on hexes, per companion influence levels, basic/special ingredients, random encounter tables, quest list/progress
  • for maps for all the random encounters, I’m going to use a VTT version of Professor Dungeon Master’s Ultimate Dungeon Terrain with near, medium, far distances abstracted… especially for the solo play. I think it’s a good solution but I wonder about if my players will yearn for more specific battle maps… I guess for VTT integration Demiplane will probably link up with Roll20 more and more… I wonder if Roll20 or Demiplane will be adding official flip mats to the catalog in the future…
  • mentioned in the other thread, but having the XP current value shown on the sheet without clicking into manage XP would enhance the UX a lot, building excitement for random encounters as making progress.
  • still requesting a GM screen for the tables so I can quickly calculate XP value earned by the party from various encounters… this AP I think wouldn’t make much sense as milestone leveling and I’ll need to keep these tables close at hand during this AP.
  • as mentioned, it would help to have companions from the companion handbook as pre-gens
  • Since a lot of random encounters happen during camping… it would be really nice for Valerie to click on the armor icon to toggle don/doff status and click on the shield icon to toggle shield raised status
  • Linzi’s spell “inkshot” uses an attack roll and should have the MAP roll buttons like other attack roll spells

I love hearing about folks playing through Kingmaker, I helped do the conversion for it on Roll20 when it initially launched!

To the actual points you raised however, I’m not sure if it released a little later than the rest of Extinction Curse but you can find the Player’s Guide here.

Roll20 does in fact have several of the Pathfinder Flipmats and Flip-Tiles. They can be a little tricky to find on the marketplace but if you search for everything published by Paizo they’ll come up as options. Additionally, on Roll20 all of the maps within an adventure path are converted to be usable as battle maps. For Kingmaker we also included a customizable map to let your players help visualize the settlement they’re building, I remember there were also some upgrades made to the explorable hex map but it’s been a while since this released and I can’t recall the specifics there. There’s a free preview of Chapter 1 available as well that will give you a feeling for how the full product has been converted and laid out.

We’re hoping to implement some toggles for things like raising your shield but I don’t have a timeline on that.

Finally, I’ve got that report in about “Inkshot” needing the MAP roll buttons.

Thank you for the response! I generally prefer owlbear rodeo to roll20 as not having so much extra interface but I’ll be taking another look at it once there’s more integration with demiplane.
