Help understanding the Fastball Special Reaction

Hello, my group is having a little trouble with the Fastball Special rules and how they work.

Lets say Colossus is throwing Wolverine at a Hydra agent.

  1. Does Colossus go up to Wolverine on his turn and throw him or is it Wolverine that must go to him?
  2. Does both characters need there reaction for this to work or just one of them?
  3. who need to do the agility check and what is the TN for it?
  4. If its Colossus that needs to go to Wolverine and throw him. Does that take up his hole turn like RAM does or can he still use his standard action for something like attack ?
  1. Wolverine needs to be within reach of Colossus on Colossus’s turn. So, Colossus needs to move to Wolverine if he’s not already within reach.
  2. Colossus uses his Action to throw Wolverine. Wolverine uses his Reaction if Colossus successfully hits the target with Wolverine, so remember that Wolverine needs to have a Reaction available to do this. The range for Colossus (Metal Form) throwing Wolverine is 20 squares, with Trouble on the Agility Attack check for a range of 21-40 squares. 40 is the max distance.
  3. Colossus makes an Agility Attack versus the Agility Defense of the target. If he is successful, Wolverine uses his Reaction and makes a Basic Melee Attack versus the Melee Defense of the target. If Colossus fails the check, Wolverine simply lands nearby.
  4. Colossus only uses up his Action to throw Wolverine. If he needed to move to be adjacent to Wolverine, he can still use any movement he has left. Colossus also still has any reactions he might normally get.

I’m pretty sure when a Big sized character throws an Average sized character the range is 5 Squares (10 max).

Colossus has Mighty 3 so his effective size/lifting capacity increases his throwing distance.

You are correct, I missed that earlier and came here to correct my statement.

In my calculations a Titanic strength Character (Big + Mighty 3) can throw an average sized character 1,600 Spaces (2,666.66 yards). That’s over 1½ miles. That’s travelling at 1,090.9 mph, (Mach 1.4).

Thank you this helps a lot

That is incorrect. The Size Multiplier on the Resize Table is only applied if you use the Grow Power to become that Size. A big character with Mighty 3 still has a max range of 20 Squares. Big + Mighty 3 = 4 shifts down from the size of the object ==> Average = 20 Squares.

I have to disagree.

Mighty 3 - “Treat the character as three sizes bigger for lifting, carrying, swinging and throwing things.”

That would make Colossus the equivalent of Titanic.

The question now is do we adjust throwing ranges as I did from the Resize table.

Here’s an example of not doing that: I, as a Rank 1 Average Civilian, could pick up Bruce Banner and throw him a max of 10 Spaces (50 feet). Wow, who would have thought I could do that? The Hulk could pick me up and throw me a max of 40 Spaces (200 ft). I could pick up a rock and throw it 40 Spaces, the Hulk could pick up a rock and throw it 40 Spaces.

I know you’re a vet’ and we can interpret the rules in different ways but I would suggest my way of doing this seems a little bit more realistic. In the comics the Hulk would be able to throw me out of orbit, a max of 40 Spaces seems to be a bit underwhelming.

I do know there are problems in the way I interpret it (eg, throwing someone at Mach 3), but this still seems more in line with these god like heroes and villains.

As a narrator, if you want to handle it that way, please go ahead, just realize that most people will not at their tables. But if you are going to do it that way, the problem is that you’re essentially double stacking the benefit from Mighty. You increase it to 20 squares due to size then also multiply it by the size multiplier on the resize chart. Plus those shorter ranges are meant for throwing things for accuracy, like throwing improvised weapons. If you want to allow characters to throw things further just for distance, that’s fine. There’s a difference.
