Motives & Faults - An aid in Roleplay

“To know thine self is a privilege not be taken lightly!”

This is a general roleplay tip, but one that can be especially helpful in a looser RPG format like Dagger Heart. And I would love to see it implemented as part of character building.

What are your Motives? These aren’t your grand ambitions, though those are great too, but the small moment to moment desires and instincts. Here’s a few examples:

  • Do you want money? Then you’ll always be thinking of ways to make some and keeping a keen eye out for valuables.

  • Are you a foodie? Then you’ll always be thinking of that next meal, or wanting to try some new rare cuisine. Maybe even eating the very monsters you fight (Laios anyone?).

  • If you’re looking for love or physical companionship, you’ll be flirting with everyone.

Faults , which can be likened to D&D’s flaws, can be a bit trickier. Sometimes your fault, is simply your motive turned up to eleven. Like when your general need or desire for money turns to stealing from the destitute or even killing innocents for it.

Sometimes faults are in opposition to your motives. Like, if you’re seeking love, but you’re awkward and clumsy around your “type”. (For something like this, I’d tell your GM ahead of time that you have a thing for Orcs, galapa, ribbit, or who ever you have in mind, so they can play with that)

Anyways that’s it, Happy adventuring! And hope you all have fun coming up with your own motives and faults. (Apologies if this is in the wrong Category.)
