Trouble with Makeshift Staff feature on wizard with Staff Nexus arcane thesis

I am trying to understand how to use the Makeshift Staff feature on a wizard character with the Staff Nexus arcane thesis. The description for Staff Nexus reads:

You begin play with a makeshift staff of your own invention. It has the magical trait and contains one cantrip and one 1st-rank spell, both from your spellbook.

My player’s character (which I have edit rights to) is showing the same spell listed twice for his Makeshift Staff, rather than one cantrip and one 1st-rank spell, as it should. You can swap out the spell listed, but each time it just duplicates so it is listed twice, and at any rate, any time you cast it once, both listings show used. Likewise, if we try to change the listed spell(s), we can do so, but each time you select any spell it automatically duplicates into both slots, with the same casting issue. How do we load the makeshift staff with two different spells, one a cantrip, and one a 1st-rank, and keep the castings of them separate?

Hey Davelozzi, thanks for bringing this up. I think I know what’s causing the problem and in the process of troubleshooting I actually found a different related issue where it won’t let you add spells at all.

I’ve got a ticket filed on this for our development team to fix these issues. It’s going to take a little while before that fix is available however. In the meantime I unfortunately wasn’t able to find a workaround other than manually keeping track somehow.

Just echoing that I’m having the same issue with makeshift staff (April 14, 2025). Seems like @Eve figured out one of the root causes.

As the devs work on this issue, would it be possible to test if the Makeshift Staff works as intended if it gets updated? I’m not sure if Demiplane would expect us to buy the new staff (that we updated via crafting) and just add the original cantrip/level 1 spell as a custom change OR if just add the features (e.g., spells) from the new staff to the original Makeshift Staff item. I think I would prefer the second path, but I’m not sure what makes more sense from a design perspective for Demiplane’s implementation.

If I understood you correctly I can say that once the fix is available you shouldn’t have to change anything with the staff currently on your character sheet. You should simply be able to add the cantrip and first rank spell to the existing staff.
